Background
The society derived its name from the vast old Mengo District whic comprised of Mubende, Luweero, Mukono, Mpigi and Kampala. Mengo Teachers’ Cooperative Savings and Credit Society Limited (METCO), is historical and is about the society’s birth, growth and performance. At its fiftieth year of existence, the society has matured into a model of savings and credit organizations in Uganda. Mengo Teachers’ Cooperative Savings and Credit Society Limited derived its inspiration from the late Archbishop Joseph Nakabaale Kiwanuka, who had a firm belief in the cooperative movement, its principles and practices as vehicles of economic and social development and who, through the Church, promoted the
formation of cooperative societies and unions in the early 1960s.
The Archbishop was mindful of St Paul’s teaching” A HEALTHY SOUL IN A HEALTHY BODY.”
